THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Grand Oaks still owns District 13-6A volleyball, but Tuesday night’s most interesting match is happening somewhere else.

College Park travels to The Woodlands for the second War of the Woods meeting of the season, and this one has everything a late-season district rivalry match should have: a previous result to settle, playoff positioning at stake and two teams that have already shown they are capable of making the district leader uncomfortable.

College Park won the first meeting 3-1 earlier this season. Now The Woodlands gets the rematch on its home floor.

That alone would make Tuesday worth watching. The standings make it bigger.

College Park enters the match 7-1 in district play, while The Woodlands is 6-2. A Cavaliers victory would complete the season sweep and create real separation in second place. A Highlanders win would pull The Woodlands even with College Park at 7-2 and turn the chase behind Grand Oaks into a much tighter race.

And these aren't just the teams sitting second and third.

College Park and The Woodlands are the only two teams that have seriously threatened Grand Oaks’ district winning streak this season.

That matters because Grand Oaks has now won 68 consecutive district matches, a run that has gone well beyond simply being impressive. Every district opponent knows exactly what is waiting when the Grizzlies walk into the gym, and yet the streak keeps growing.

Grand Oaks swept Conroe 3-0 Friday to improve to 8-0 in district play and extend the streak another night. The Grizzlies travel to Willis on Tuesday, and until somebody actually beats them, there is no reason to pretend the district championship runs through anywhere else.

It runs through Grand Oaks.

But College Park and The Woodlands have at least demonstrated that the Grizzlies can be pushed.

The Woodlands took Grand Oaks all the way to five sets earlier this season before the Grizzlies escaped with the victory. College Park has also made Grand Oaks work harder than most of the district has been able to do.

Now those two challengers face each other.

College Park brings a three-match winning streak into Tuesday after sweeping Willis on Friday. More importantly, the Cavaliers already know they can beat The Woodlands. That changes the psychology of a rematch. College Park isn't coming across town hoping it belongs in the matchup. It already has the first victory in hand.

The pressure may be greater on The Woodlands.

The Highlanders have won two straight and swept Caney Creek on Friday, but a second loss to College Park would leave them two matches behind the Cavaliers and would give College Park the season sweep. If The Woodlands wants to turn second place into a real race, Tuesday is the night to do it.

That is why this is more than the usual rivalry atmosphere.

College Park has already landed the first punch. The Woodlands gets its answer Tuesday.

The other significant race is around the playoff line.

Oak Ridge enters Tuesday at 5-3 and currently controls fourth place, the final postseason position. The War Eagles swept Cleveland on Friday and travel to Conroe next. At this point in the season, Oak Ridge doesn't need help from anyone else. Keep winning the matches it should win, and the War Eagles can make it increasingly difficult for anyone below them to climb back into the top four.

Willis, at 3-5, is the team with the biggest problem. The Wildkats are already chasing Oak Ridge and now get Grand Oaks, the one opponent nobody in the district has been able to solve for years.

Conroe, Caney Creek and Cleveland have even less room left for mistakes.

The top four are beginning to separate from the rest of the district, but Tuesday could dramatically change the order inside that group.

Grand Oaks remains No. 1 until somebody proves otherwise.

Oak Ridge is trying to lock down No. 4.

And right in the middle of it is the match of the night.

College Park at The Woodlands. War of the Woods. A rematch. Second place on the line. And the district's two strongest threats to Grand Oaks standing across the net from one another.
