Spring ceremony honors juniors and seniors for excellence in social studies
Tuesday, April 29, 2025
The Woodlands, Texas – College Park High School hosted the RHO KAPPA National Social Studies Honor Society Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, recognizing juniors and seniors for their outstanding academic achievement in the field of social studies.
The ceremony was held in the school auditorium and led by student officers, who organized and conducted the evening’s program. The event was hosted by RHO KAPPA chapter sponsor and social studies teacher Joanna Chestnut, who supports the group’s operations throughout the year.
RHO KAPPA is the only national honor society dedicated to recognizing excellence in the field of social studies at the high school level. Students inducted into the organization demonstrate high academic performance, civic engagement, and a strong commitment to the study of history, government, economics, and related subjects.
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Dr. Mark Murrell Scholarship Award, named in honor of the school’s former principal and longtime advocate for civic learning. Dr. Merrill presented the award to this year’s recipients, Kathleen Anderson and Nancy Dang, for their excellence in leadership, service, and academic achievement.
In addition, Ms. Chestnut presented the Confidence in Service Scholarship to Emily Flaco, recognizing her quiet leadership, dedication to community, and consistent service—hallmarks of the RHO KAPPA mission.
The organization’s name comes from Semitic roots: Rho (from “resh,” meaning “head”) and Kappa (from “kapf,” meaning “palm of the hand”), symbolizing the belief that knowledge without service is meaningless.
The ceremony concluded with recognition of the new inductees and scholarship recipients, highlighting the role of civic learning and academic excellence in preparing future leaders.
