Free Youth Heart Screenings Set for Sunday

Students and athletes ages 11 to 25 can receive a free ECG screening designed to identify warning signs of hidden heart conditions.

MISSOURI CITY, Texas — The Cody Stephens Foundation, in partnership with KPRC 2 and Missouri City Fire & Rescue, will provide free heart screenings Sunday, Aug. 30, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Missouri City Recreation & Tennis Center.
The screening is available to students and athletes ages 11 to 25, regardless of their school, sport or level of competition. The recreation center is at 2701 Cypress Point Drive in Missouri City.
Each participant will complete a health questionnaire and receive an electrocardiogram, commonly called an ECG or EKG. The painless test records the heart’s electrical activity and may reveal warning signs of conditions that are not apparent during a routine sports physical.
The ECG portion takes approximately five minutes. Results are reviewed to determine whether a participant should be referred for additional medical evaluation.
The Cody Stephens Foundation was created after 18-year-old Cody Stephens died in 2012 from an undetected heart condition. The organization works with schools and communities to expand access to ECG screenings and raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest among young people.
KPRC 2 reported in February that the foundation had screened more than 120,000 young athletes during its partnership with the television station and identified more than 300 participants with serious hidden heart conditions.
The Sunday screening is free. Advance registration is recommended for families seeking a specific appointment time, although a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted as space permits.

Appointments may be reserved through the Cody Stephens Foundation registration portal.
Families unable to attend Sunday may contact the Texas Children’s Heart Center about cardiac sports examinations available through its Houston-area locations.
