Grand Oaks, the reigning 6A state champion, is poised to defend its title against the Fulshear Chargers (40-4) in a high-stakes matchup at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. Fulshear advanced to the championship after defeating Westlake 3-1 in the other semifinal.
The Grizzlies displayed remarkable composure in their semifinal match, edging Allen in the first set 25-23 before taking control in the second and third sets, 25-16 and 25-21. Grand Oaks Head Coach Morgan Rogers emphasized the importance of focus amid the high-pressure atmosphere.
“It’s easy to let this moment get too big,” said Rogers. “We only had six returning players from last year’s team, so we focused on staying within ourselves and limiting the outside noise.”
The first set saw a tightly contested battle, featuring 12 ties and multiple lead changes before Grand Oaks gained momentum late in the set. A 3-0 run, punctuated by an ace from senior Samara Coleman, provided the edge needed to close out the set.
The second set showcased the Grizzlies' adaptability and precision. With strong serves and consistent defense, Grand Oaks opened an eight-point lead early and maintained control despite Allen’s attempts to rally. Miscues by the Eagles and dominant play from Grand Oaks’ front row helped seal the 25-16 win.
The third set featured Allen’s strongest push, fueled by kills from outside hitter Olivia Kitur, but a late 4-0 run by the Grizzlies and a decisive ace from junior Halle Thompson secured the sweep.
Coach Rogers attributed the victory to the team’s maturity and experience in high-stakes matches. “These girls have played on national teams and in championship settings before,” said Rogers. “They trust their training and know how to execute when it matters.”
Grand Oaks will face a formidable Fulshear team in Saturday’s final, but the Grizzlies remain focused on preparation and execution.
“We’ll celebrate tonight, but tomorrow it’s back to work,” Rogers said. “We’ll recover, refocus, and be ready to bring our best.”
The championship match is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Curtis Culwell Center.
