Naomi Weller wins 5K individual title as team places five in top 7 for 19-point championship
The Woodlands, Texas – Oct. 9, 2025 8:00 a.m.
Naomi Weller, a junior at The Woodlands High School, won the UIL 2025 District 13-6A Girls Cross Country Championship on Thursday, October 9, leading from the opening mile and never giving up ground in the 5K (3.1-mile) race. Her winning time was 18:09.25.

Weller established an early lead with a first mile of 5:44, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the field, and maintained a steady pace through the second mile (5:57.9) before closing with a final mile split of 6:26.8. She widened the gap on the field in the first half of the race and held her position to the finish, leading The Woodlands to a dominant team victory with 19 points.
“It was kind of the plan—just get clear and go,” said Head Coach Juris Green. “There’s a lot of company in this district, so you have to be able to handle running out front. She did that well.”

Weller said her race strategy was simple: stay relaxed and consistent. “I was prepared to kind of be running on my own,” she said. “I try to keep a steady pace that I’ve decided before the race. I just wanted to lead and hold that pace”.
The Woodlands swept the top three individual spots
The Woodlands placed five runners in the top seven. Behind Weller were Stella Wilder (2nd, 18:35.89), Vanessa Vezga (3rd, 18:49.95), Marta Linde (6th, 19:07.25), and Sara De Los Santos (7th, 19:27.45). The team posted a combined time of 1:34:09.8, averaging 18:49 per runner.

Coach Green said the team is still progressing toward peak performance. “We’re building momentum. You don’t want to peak too early in October. Our goal is to have our best races in about three weeks—which is exactly when the state meet is,” he said.
