Houston, September 17, 2023 - Amid the echoing cheers and the chill of the Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex in Houston, echoes of clashing sticks and roaring fans filled the air as The Woodlands faced off against Cy-Woods in the highly anticipated season opener of the 2023 Interscholastic Hockey League (ISHL). Though the final whistle saw The Woodlands trailing 3-5, the match was nothing short of thrilling, with displays of individual brilliance and the emergence of fresh talent from the local high school.
The opening period set the pace, with The Woodlands' #66, Matias Aguilar of Oak Ridge HS, delivering a scintillating performance by scoring on a power play at 14:04. Cy-Woods, not one to be left behind, responded with a goal at the 3:37 mark, making their intentions clear.
The second period saw Cy-Woods hitting the accelerator, netting two goals within a minute's difference. But The Woodlands, resilient as ever, rallied back. Braydon McClung, backed by an impeccable assist from Aguilar, found the net, soon followed by Tayler Calder from Grand Oaks. Calder's goal was the result of a flawless synergy between Thatcher Kennedy from John Cooper and Colby Falast from The Woodlands.
The third period witnessed a continuation of Cy-Woods' offensive, leading to their eventual victory. Yet, The Woodlands showcased their mettle and determination, even going for an empty net in the game's final moments.
Under the stewardship of Head Coach Derrick Harper, The Woodlands Ice Hockey team, featuring a slew of new players, demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with. Their weekly practices, held every Thursday evening at 5:35 p.m., are bound to refine their synergy and strategy further.
Beyond this spirited encounter, it's important to note the significance and competitive nature of the ISHL. Serving the southeastern region of Texas, the league boasts several teams competing at the Varsity level, with The Woodlands part of the fiercely competitive North Division. This division includes formidable teams like College Station, Cy-Woods, Fair/Creek, Klein, Tomball, and of course, The Woodlands.
The next challenge for The Woodlands is set against Strake Jesuit at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, at the Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center. With the energy, enthusiasm, and potential displayed in the opening game, fans have every reason to be optimistic about the upcoming matches.
