Volleyball: Grand Oaks Wins War of the Oaks, Extends District Win Streak to 66

The Grizzlies passed their first major district test, while an early divide is forming between the top and bottom halves of District 13-6A.

SOUTH MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — Grand Oaks did more than protect an undefeated district record Tuesday, Sept. 15. The Grizzlies swept an Oak Ridge team that also entered the War of the Oaks unbeaten, extending one of the area’s most impressive streaks to 66 consecutive district victories.

That result established Grand Oaks and College Park as the district’s final two unbeaten teams. Oak Ridge’s first loss dropped the War Eagles into a third-place tie with The Woodlands, but both remain above the early playoff line.

After three matches, the district has begun to separate into three groups: Grand Oaks and College Park at the top, Oak Ridge and The Woodlands immediately behind them, and four teams trying to break into the top half.

Friday’s schedule favors the current leaders because each of the top four teams faces an opponent from the bottom half of the standings. This writer expects Grand Oaks and College Park to improve to 4-0, with Oak Ridge and The Woodlands moving to 3-1.

That would make Friday less of a potential reshuffling and more of a hold-your-position night. The pressure falls on Conroe, Caney Creek, Willis and Cleveland to produce an upset and prevent the district’s playoff contenders from creating additional separation.

Oak Ridge may have the most important response to make. Tuesday’s loss ended the War Eagles’ unbeaten start, but a strong performance Friday would show that the defeat changed their record—not their position as one of the district’s leading playoff contenders.

The expected results would also set up the district’s biggest match of the young season. College Park travels to Grand Oaks at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22. If both teams win Friday, the Cavaliers and Grizzlies will meet with matching 4-0 records, sole possession of first place on the line and Grand Oaks’ 66-match district winning streak at stake.

For College Park, the match represents an opportunity to take control of the district race and end a streak that has continued across five seasons. For Grand Oaks, it is another chance to demonstrate why the road to the district championship continues to run through the Grizzlies.

The standings show where every team sits. Friday’s matches may reveal whether the top four are beginning to pull away. Tuesday’s Grand Oaks–College Park showdown could determine who leads them.
