THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Madison Challis, a sophomore at The Woodlands High School, has earned a spot on Age Group Team USA after placing fourth in her age group at the USA Triathlon Draft-Legal Sprint National Championships on Friday, Aug. 7, in Milwaukee.

The 15-year-old finished the race in 1 hour, 10 minutes, 49 seconds, placing fourth among 14 competitors in the female 15-19 division and 66th overall among 332 competitors. Her finish qualified her for the 2027 World Triathlon Age Group Championships in Hamburg, Germany. USA Triathlon awards qualifying positions from the Draft-Legal Sprint Nationals to the top 18 finishers in each age group.

Challis reached the national starting line less than four months after an injury suffered on Good Friday interrupted her training and racing season. The Milwaukee event was only her second race since returning from the injury.

Her recovery included MRI scans, doctor visits and physical therapy in The Woodlands and College Station. She also worked with a physician in Houston to make changes to her running form.

Her first race back came Saturday, Aug. 1, at the USA Triathlon Youth & Junior Nationals at Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio. Challis competed in the youth 13-15 division, completing a 375-meter swim, 10-kilometer bike and 2.5-kilometer run in 35 minutes, 51 seconds. She placed 16th among 62 athletes and averaged about 21 mph on the bike. Her time was 18 seconds faster than her performance on the same course a year earlier.

Six days later, she moved from the shorter youth course to the full draft-legal sprint distance at the national championships in Milwaukee — a 750-meter swim, 19.4-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run. Challis' splits show where her fourth-place finish was built. She came out of the 750-meter swim in 12:07, sixth in the 15-19 division, an important position in a draft-legal race because athletes who exit the water near the front have a better opportunity to connect with competitive cycling groups. The bike was Challis' strongest leg relative to her age group. She covered the 19.4-kilometer course in 34:17, the fourth-fastest bike split in the 15-19 division, while averaging 21.11 mph. In draft-legal racing, where positioning and the ability to stay with a fast-moving group can shape the race, that performance kept her in contention for one of the top finishing positions. After a 54-second second transition, Challis ran the 5K in 21:15, a 6:52-per-mile pace, completing the race in 1:10:49 and securing fourth place in the division.

Draft-legal triathlon allows competitors to ride closely behind or alongside other cyclists during the bike portion of the race. Unlike a non-drafting triathlon, athletes can use the reduced wind resistance created by other riders, making positioning, pack riding and race strategy an important part of the cycling leg. USA Triathlon uses draft-legal racing as part of its youth and junior development pathway.

Challis races draft-legal triathlons for SelecTri and also competes in cross country and track for The Woodlands High School. At 15, this is her final year in the youth triathlon division; she will move to the junior level next season, which is for athletes ages 16-19.

Her Milwaukee finish now gives Challis an opportunity to represent the United States internationally. The 2027 World Triathlon Age Group Championships are scheduled for Sept. 8-12 in Hamburg, with the draft-legal sprint among the championship events. World Triathlon's sprint age-group competition includes a 16-19 division.

Before then, Challis' attention returns closer to home. She is preparing to rejoin The Woodlands High School cross country team as the Highlanders begin the 2026-27 school year.

After a spring and summer focused on getting healthy enough to race again, Challis returns to her high school teams with a national fourth-place finish and a future opportunity to race for Age Group Team USA in Germany.
