Interactive competition teaches 7th and 8th graders soft skills, confidence, and professionalism
SHENANDOAH, TX — On May 5, 2025, York Junior High School brought seventh and eighth-grade students to the Jett Center at Woodforest Bank Stadium for a transformative event: The Amazing Shake, inspired by the nationally recognized program from the Ron Clark Academy.

The day began with student arrivals and a warm welcome, followed by an engaging icebreaker activity led by Ms. Freeze and Ms. Longoria. Throughout the morning, students rotated through a series of structured training sessions: handshake techniques with Dr. Henry and Mrs. Primm, headshots during a short break, and conversation skills practice with Mr. Ulbricht.
One highlight was a restaurant etiquette session presented by Principal Lindsay Ardoin, a longtime supporter of the Amazing Shake who demonstrated proper table manners and shared tips on dining professionalism. Her participation helped emphasize the real-world application of social grace.
Lunch at noon included VIP guests, giving students a chance to practice their conversational skills in a semi-formal setting. After lunch, Associate Principal Kelsea Meredith led a session on preparing for the competition. Known as a driving force behind bringing The Amazing Shake to York, Meredith was instrumental in planning the day and guiding students through the experience.
At 1:20 p.m., students entered The Gauntlet—a high-energy, timed rotation of professional scenarios modeled after real-life challenges. This round simulated a interactive environment that tested students on eye contact, handshake quality, poise, and conversational flow. Judges included local educators and business professionals.
The event concluded with the announcement of the top performer, before students returned to campus.
The Amazing Shake is more than just a contest—it's a developmental experience. Rooted in character education, the program is built around essential values like confidence, manners, social awareness, and perseverance. According to organizers, York Junior High hopes to send one or more top performers to compete at the Amazing Shake National Competition held annually in Atlanta, Georgia.
